As the adoption of WLAN grows steadily across all sectors in the UK, the number of data applications running across them is also beginning to increase. Oganisations are continually looking for new applications to leverage the initial investment made in the wireless LAN infrastructure.

In the past year, the UK has seen over 100% growth in the adoption of wireless LAN in the Healthcare sector. One application in particular that is emerging as a clear driver for wireless LAN adoption within Healthcare is Asset Tracking. There is a sharp increase in the number of hospitals interesting in combining newly available RFID technology with their wireless LAN investment to provide an effective way to keep track of their key resources across the campus. |
“Customers are really seeing how the technology can provide benefits in areas such as patient care and safety, equipment utilisation and staff productivity” commented Roger Willmott, CEO of Airetrak Ltd, a UK company specialising in Wi-Fi tracking to the Healthcare sectors. He explains: “In the past, traditional tracking solutions involved installing costly readers across the hospital operating at proprietary frequencies. Now, using centralised wireless LAN products along with Airetrak’s ResourceViewTM, software we can locate resources across the hospital to a high degree of accuracy, for less than 80% of the cost of older solutions.”
These improvements are borne out by a recent study by the University of Texas which concluded: “the benefits of RFID within the Healthcare sector are valued at $27.95 billion”. Similarly in the UK last year, Health Minister Lord Hunt announced ‘The use of barcoding and radio frequency identification (RFID) tagging could save the NHS millions of pounds a year”.
Airetrak’s works directly with the medical staff at many UK NHS hospitals and has firsthand experience of how the lack of visibility of key resources can really impact the smooth operation of the hospital. Airetrak ResourceViewTM is designed to address these problems by providing effective and easy to use location tracking capability. It can also send alerts when equipment leaves certain areas, providing effective theft prevention.
Roger Willmott summarises: “Providing effective business applications to leverage the investment in wireless LAN technology can provide real returns to the customer in the form of improved service and reduced costs. Many of our partners are having success with wireless LAN product and services sales into customers by leading their sales effort with this kind of value based proposition”.
